Cultivating Wisdom & Compassion: The Five Mindfulness Trainings of Thích Nhất Hạnh

A freely offered course providing guidance for mindful living, compassion, and ethical clarity.

Introduction

This course is currently in development. Rooted in the Plum Village tradition founded by Thích Nhất Hạnh, it offers a gentle, practical introduction to the Five Mindfulness Trainings — a contemporary expression of the Buddha’s teachings on compassion, understanding, ethical awareness, and deep looking.

The Five Mindfulness Trainings are not commandments or rules to follow perfectly. They function as a North Star — a compass we walk toward with awareness, compassion, and intention. The aim is not perfection but direction: small, mindful steps that reduce suffering for ourselves and the people around us.

Unlike ethical codes that emphasize reward or punishment, the Trainings are approached as a mindfulness practice — a way of looking deeply, choosing with awareness, and living with greater clarity and care in the present moment. Each Training becomes an invitation, not an obligation.

This course is not an academic study or authoritative interpretation of the Trainings. Its intention is to share them in a way that feels supportive, grounded, and accessible, offering modern language and practical guidance for applying these teachings in daily life.

This course will be offered free of charge when it’s released, and you’re welcome to join the waitlist for early access and updates.

What You'll Learn

This course teaches how to bring mindfulness, compassion, and ethical clarity into everyday life — in ways that are grounded, accessible, and deeply human. You’ll explore how each Training functions as a mindfulness practice: something to engage with gently and imperfectly, not as a rule to obey but as a pathway for reducing suffering and increasing understanding in daily life.

You’ll explore how to work with the Five Mindfulness Trainings in practical, modern terms:

1. Reverence for Life
Cultivating compassion and non-harm toward yourself and others.
Seeing interconnectedness (“interbeing”) and choosing actions that reduce suffering.

2. True Happiness
Practicing generosity, mindful consumption, and ethical livelihood.
Understanding how lasting happiness arises from compassion, not accumulation.

3. True Love
Bringing respect, responsibility, authenticity, and care into relationships.
Learning the four elements of true love: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and inclusiveness.

4. Loving Speech & Deep Listening
Communicating in ways that reduce harm, build connection, and foster understanding.
Working skillfully with anger, perception, and the patterns that create conflict.

5. Nourishment & Healing
Bringing mindfulness to what you consume — food, media, conversations, emotions.
Developing choices that support well-being rather than overwhelm or escape.

You’ll also learn how to:

  • apply these Trainings with gentleness and non-perfection
  • reflect on your own values and ethical intentions
  • cultivate mindful speech, deep listening, and compassion
  • create practices that feel sustainable and realistic
  • understand how the Trainings support resilience and inner peace

The emphasis is on practical application, compassionate honesty, and slow, steady transformation.

How This Course Fits Into the Zenyasa Wellness Pathway

“Cultivating Wisdom & Compassion” is part of the Meditation & Contemplative Practices pathway within the Zenyasa Wellness Embodied Wisdom system.

It complements the rest of the pathway by offering:

  • ethical clarity that supports ACT’s values-based living
  • compassion practices that support DBT’s relational and emotional skills
  • mindfulness principles that deepen meditation and embodiment
  • a practical framework for bringing contemplative practice into daily life
  • a daily-life North Star that guides speech, choices, and relationships

Like all practices within the Embodied Wisdom pathway, the Five Mindfulness Trainings are approached not as doctrines to achieve but as compassionate mindfulness practices that support present-moment clarity and reduce suffering in practical, everyday ways.

Together, these teachings support a grounded, compassionate approach to living — in relationship with yourself, others, and the wider world.
